Historic District Standards Our homes are located in a designated Historic District of the City of Montgomery. To protect and maintain the distinctive character of our neighborhood, please be advised that any planned exterior alterations, including changes in paint color or major landscaping changes, including tree removal, are subject to prior approval by the City’s Architectural Review Board. Please address any questions to the City’s Planning Controls Division at (334) 241-2722. Some of the standards and process for obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness (required for changes) are described more detail in the section of City Ordinance in the PDF file below.
In addition, a building permit should be applied for in the City’s Building Department, Room 134, City Hall, prior to beginning any interior or exterior alterations. Please direct any questions concerning permit requirements or fees to the Building Department at (334) 241-2072.

Historic Markers
Have you seen the "Historic Home Markers" throughout the district and thought you might like to have one? It’s easier than you think!
Step #1 Call Rick Eakin (206-1628) at the Water Department. Ask for the date water was first turned on in your home.
Step #2 Call Christy Anderson in City Planning at 241-2041 and give her this date. You will need to provide information about the house, confirm the cost of the sign, and mail or take in a check. Your request for the sign must receive approval at the next meeting of the Historic Development Commission (HDC). You will be required to attend the HDC meeting, which is usually the second Tuesday of the month at 5:15pm in the Council Chambers of City Hall. Once approved, it takes about 3 weeks to receive your sign.
